In 1958 two teachers at Riverview High School were discussing the pros and cons of the direction in which they saw education moving. One of them, Edward Currie, suggested that the way they might see their own visions realized was to open a private school. The planning for a partnership between Edward Currie and Ronald MacArthur had begun. That successful partnership was to last for over thirty years: in the fall of 1958, Cape Breton Business College enrolled its first 69 students in the diploma program in Office Administration/Secretarial.

As the reputation of Cape Breton Business College grew, and more contacts were made with employers, it became evident that there was a need for office personnel with more specialized training. Consequently, in 1968 specialist instructors were hired, and two advanced programs were offered: Medical Secretarial and Legal Secretarial.

Two teachers entered into a partnership in 1958 that would open the door for new educational offerings in Cape Breton. Ronald MacArthur and the late Edward Currie were both working at Riverview Rural High School in Coxheath when they began a discussion about the direction of education and their vision for the future.
